What are Wrinkle Relaxers?

Wrinkle relaxers are a naturally occurring product that is used to relax the muscles that cause wrinkles.

Since the 1970’s, this product has been used by doctors to treat a variety of medical conditions including strabismus (lazy eye), blepharospasm (eyelid spasm), cervical dystonia (wry neck), and spasticity (sometimes due to cerebral palsy).

Today, this product is used in over 70 countries around the world for over 20 indications.

In Australia, this product is commonly used for a variety of conditions including the treatment of glabellar frown lines (lines between the eyebrows) and hyperhidrosis of the axillae (excessive underarm sweating). It is a prescription only medication and is therefore only available from your doctor.

How do wrinkle relaxers work?
Lines and wrinkles are caused by many factors including normal aging, sun damage, the effects of gravity, sleep lines and repeated activity of muscles to show facial expressions. This product is used to relax the muscles that aggravate these lines. Over time, the lines will gradually smooth and soften and new lines will be prevented from forming.

Cosmetic use of wrinkle relaxers
Our wrinkle relaxer has been used for a number of cosmetic applications including glabellar frown lines, horizontal forehead lines and lateral canthal lines or “crow’s feet”. Other uses include brow lift, nasal scrunch or “bunny lines”, marionette lines, mental (chin) crease, platysmal bands and facial asymmetry.

How are wrinkle relaxers used?
This is a non surgical procedure. Prior to treatment, the area is cleaned and ice may be used to minimise discomfort. Using a very fine needle, a small amount of the wrinkle relaxer is injected in to specific muscle sites. Each area takes between 10 to 15 minutes to treat.

Discomfort is minimal and anaesthetic is not usually required. Normal activity is resumed soon after treatment. Following treatment, clients are asked to remain upright for 2 to 4 hours, to avoid touching the area and to use the treated muscles frequently.

Initial results are usually seen within 1 to 3 days. Maximal effect is seen after 1 to 2 weeks. Clients are offered a free review consultation approximately 2 weeks after treatment to access the progress.

How long does this wrinkle relaxer last?
The effects of this product usually last between 3 to 6 months before muscle activity slowly begins to return. The effects tend to last longer following repeated treatments.

If you choose not to have further treatments, your muscles will eventually return to normal activity and your wrinkles will revert to their pre-treatment condition.

Are there any side effects?
Most side effects are infrequent, temporary, short-term and localised to the area of treatment. Possible side effects include headache, redness, swelling, discomfort and bruising. Less commonly, nausea, change of sensation and skin tightness can also occur. All of these potential complications are temporary and usually disappear within a few days.

Who shouldn’t use this wrinkle relaxer?
This product should not be used in people who have inflamed or infected skin at the proposed injection site, who are pregnant, who are breast feeding or who have a disease of the neuromuscular junction (eg Myasthenia gravis, or Eaton Lambert Syndrome).

This product should be used with caution in people taking drugs that may interfere with neuromuscular transmission eg: aminoglycoside’s (streptomycin, tobramycin, neomycin, gentamycin), spectinomycin, tetracyclines, polymyxins, lincomycin, quinine, and calcium channel blockers.

Is it Expensive?
Costs are based on the area being treated and the desired outcome, and are difficult to provide an accurate quote unless we actually see the area. Therefore, we suggest you book in for a free consultation with one of our consultants who can explain the procedure in more detail and provide you with a price for a treatment plan.
